Learn to create dramatic paintings with palette knife and impressionistic brushwork. You will learn how to design a painting through value and strong composition that will lead your eye through the painting to tell a story. You are the director and in this class Michele will show you how to direct the viewers eye with value studies and strong compositional plans. Basic perspective will also be covered. You will learn various techniques on how to hold the knife to make a great variety of marks. Information on paint manipulation and brushwork will also be included. Each morning there will be demos and in the afternoon Michele will spend time with each student helping them through the process.
Michele Byrne received a B.F.A. from Kutztown University and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. After working 20 years as a graphic designer she turned to full time painting in 2001 and began plein air painting in 2006. In recent years she has studied with some of the top painters in the country.
Byrne, who paints primarily in oils, most often explores the theme The Art of Conversation, painting cafés, street scenes, musicians, or any social situation where people gather to converse. Most of her work is done en plein air. During the past few years, Michele has painted in Cuba, New York City, Key West, California, Arizona, Atlanta and Wyoming. She has won numerous awards for her work. Recent awards include the 2018 Landscape Exhibit at the Salmagundi Club in NYC, and President’s Choice Award in the American Impressionist Society's 2018 Annual Exhibit.
Liliedahl Productions has released three instructional videos of Michele’s palette knife techniques. The most recent one is titled PALETTE KNIFE CITYSCAPES.
Michele is a Signature Member of the American Impressionist Society, Oil Painters of America, Salmagundi Club, Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters Association, and a nominated member of the Rocky Mountain Plein Air Painters.
This is a Studio and Plein Air Workshop.
