Marva Harms

Pure Impressionism in Oil

October 10-16, 2021 (Five Teaching Days)

An introduction to the characteristics of impressionism using oil or acrylic paint with a step-by-step workshop lead by Marva. Color and light are everything. We will work each day on establishing a simple plan laying in brushwork that is the right COLOR, the right VALUE, and the right TEMPERATURE. We will lay in simple color spots like the French masters and perhaps add a picnic scene as did Monet and Manet. Students will work at their own level; Marva will demonstrations throughout the workshop. Hopefully we will be able to paint outdoors, en plein air, one day to experience painting from life.

During the five day workshop you will:

  • Paint two versions of a simple still life and compare. One in the range of a five full value chart, and one from the three values on the chart.
  • Paint several small studies using the following simple techniques: lost and found edges, exaggerate color in one area, light values, warm lights and cool shadows, cool lights and warm shadows, swirl paint on, or use pallet knife, use thick paint in all of the lights.
  • Introduction to painting a model sitting with light behind them.
  • Plein Air (weather permitting) class will be outside for demos and problem solving. Class will end with a final critique.

BRING ON THE COLOUR!

"Throughout the years I have taught art at all levels in many school districts including teaching art history at the college level. I continue to teach painting workshops in Minnesota including my Floating Studio Workshops on Swan Lake. My philosophy in teaching art is to bring joy to the creative process while setting goals of excellence at all levels. Valuable information has been handed down to my students as well as kept me alive in my own development. Knowledge is key. My work is impressionistic in nature with pure color and design as my key players. My subjects are bathed in the sun of the day. I do not paint things, I paint the light on things. I believe that 'less is more' which enables me to put down clean pure color without over-working the subject. My work is high key, bright and expressive. I owe so much to the professional artists who taught me to 'see' along the way. Their vision of light and color had a direct influence on me and I am indebted to them for their artistic wisdom. My goal is to continue spreading their expertise to my fellow artists and students." - Marva Harms

2021 COVID Precautions

It is impossible to assess the impact, if any, of COVID-19 for the upcoming 2021 season, but all artists should be prepared to abide by the following measures while attending workshops.

  1. Participants must fill out a quick health questionnaire to make sure they do not exhibit any symptoms.
  2. Masks are required to be worn while in classrooms and shared spaces.
  3. Participants must also wash hands or use hand sanitizer at the beginning of each class and often during class sessions.
  4. Participants are required to stay 6 feet apart for social distancing protocols.

A floor plan per each of our three studios has been created to ensure that the artist tables and lecture area will allow people to socially distance themselves a minimum of 6 feet.
In lieu of crowding around the artist during demos, a desktop camera system and large format digital TV screens have been installed in each of the studios to allow students a close up view of demos.
We will be providing students with hand-sanitizer at their work stations. In addition, the studios will be closed for 1 hour in the late evenings for a daily UV sanitation and touch surface cleaning.
