Shibori: Modern Twist & Classic Stitches

May 25-30, 2020 (Four Teaching Days)

Shibori is a Japanese method of creating resist on fabric that dates back from the 8th century. We will explore a variety of tying, stitching and binding methods, and will begin using modern dye and will transition to an indigo vat for our last pieces. Each day class will offer new methods with demonstrations followed by time for the students to self-pace their work and ask questions. Students will receive a suggested reading and material list. All materials will be provided; however, students may bring their preferred supplies if desired. No experience in fiber arts is required, although pre-knowledge of running stitches or straight stitches is helpful. Please bring clothing that can get stained and is comfortable.

Norma Dycus Pennycuff grew up in the mountains of East Tennessee before attending the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and earning a BFA in studio arts with a concentration in Film and Photography. Norma has kept her large format camera through many moves, including the last big move to Eagle River, WI. She has taught art to many ages and abilities including families at Moon Beach Camp in Saint Germain WI. An interest in turning art towards eco friendly methods of creation led her to alternative photo processing and dying without synthetic materials.
