Spring in the Northwoods is the perfect time to shake off the winter blues and enjoy the renewal of nature and a boost in your creativity. Watercolor painting is a great way to greet the season. Practice, patience, a mandatory sense of humor; your painting will constantly be evolving through new knowledge and endless mistakes. Mindy’s goal is to share with you some of the important lessons that have made a lasting impact on her work so that you might incorporate some of this information into your own efforts. She will be demonstrating in the mornings and the afternoons will be spent painting, incorporating some of the techniques used in the morning examples. Bring a sense of adventure and a willingness to experiment, the joy is in the journey!
"I have always been surrounded by the trappings of an artist. My Mom was an illustrator and loved to paint so she encouraged me to join in while I was growing up. I studied at the Columbus College of Art and Design and later in Chicago at the American Academy of Art. It was at the Academy where I became fascinated with the magic of watercolor. The list of artists I admire is too long to list here, but many people have influenced my work. Everyone of the artists I have studied with has left a bit of their painting philosophy with me, that being one of the many reasons I find teaching so gratifying. My work is generally representational but I find myself moving to a more expressionistic style. I think the spontaneity of watercolor is better suited to capturing the immediate moment. I can’t say I prefer one subject over another, for me they all present a new opportunity. I’m best known for painting “underwater landscapes with freshwater gamefish.” That said, I ‘m always excited undertake a painting from the model or a local landscape. One of the best pieces of advice I ever received was to enjoy the journey. I am doing just that and hope my students do the same". - Melinda Schnell
