Perfect and Practical Pine Needle Basket Making

Welcome to the pretty and practical world of Pine Needle Baskets! Creativity is essential for health. When I found that my sudden entry into the role of full time caregiver was threatening my inner peace and in turn, my physical health, I added several creative practices to my other “inner health” nutrition mix (meditation, music, aroma, movement, nature, intuition, and others). In addition to Zentangle and Mandala Dot Painting, I began making pine needle baskets. Creating a useful and beautiful item from nature’s discards (needles are only harvested after the tree is done with them) really does it for my heart. It’s the ultimate re-use/re-purpose!
Since those initial baskets (which I use for fruits, essential oils, keys, change, etc.) I have made baskets to sell, and custom (commissioned) baskets to honor events, people, anniversaries, pets, etc. Just as I use mine, each one is made to be used - they are practical art. Each basket is made with love and directs its own completion (size, decoration, etc.). The colored needles are dyed by me, by hand. Many of the bases are made by arranging items (gems, stones, agates, beads, buttons, bark, lichens, etc.) in epoxy (clear, hard resin), and some out of birch bark.
Baskets are finished with a coat of clear polyurethane to strengthen (above and beyond the tightness of the stitching) and protect the needles from breaking down (they are tree discards after all). We will make one starter basket, and at least one more that includes some of these techniques: needle wraps, needle runs, beading, colored needles, alternative stitches, advanced shaping.
This is a Studio Only Workshop.

Day students are welcome to attend the Welcome Reception and Farewell Reception (included in your package). You are also invited to join the class dinners (additional fee). PAL’s (Participants at large) can vacation at Dillman’s for $45 per night for accommodations. Costs for box lunches and dinners are additional.
