Pam Luer

Nature Sketchbook Workshop
along with Naturalist Lynette Anderson

Aug 26-31, 2018 (Four Teaching Days)

This workshop is designed for artists of all skill levels who never lost their childhood love to “go play outside.” Looking closely at nature through both a naturalist’s and an artist’s eye, participants will learn about, and become inspired by the plants, insects, birds, and animals surrounding Dillman’s Bay Resort. Participants will begin their day indoors with presentations and demonstrations by both instructors. First, Naturalist Lynette’s will share some of her fascinating insights and observations about the local birds and environment. Then, Artist Pam will offer a demonstration and some insight into techniques for capturing what you see into your sketchbook. After that, we’ll lace up our walking shoes and go for a guided walk to explore the trails. No matter the weather conditions, you’ll have ample time to work in your sketchbook-- either out on the trails or back indoors. Both Lynette and Pam will provide significant one-on-one attention to help you hone your talents and enrich your experience. While Lynette introduces you to some of the fascinating mysteries of the natural world, Pam will help you preserve them with assorted drawing techniques using different sketchbook materials.

Join Pam and her guest, Lynette, on this adventure of seeing and capturing the wild world of Northern Wisconsin in a new, active way. Lynette will be with the class Monday and Tuesday morning, in order to bring us closer to the wisdom of our environment.

Topics Covered:

  • Design and composition.
  • The importance of experimenting with different materials.
  • Creating new habits of resourcing for future work.

LYNETTE ANDERSON grew up on a family farm and developed an insatiable curiosity about the natural world. She has been sharing and teaching as a naturalist for over 35 years. Anderson believes strongly that time spent in nature can bring us new insights, stir our creative pot, and bring us the calm and healing so necessary in our fast-paced world.

PAM LUER has been a working artist for nearly 20 years. Her passion for teaching and being outdoors is the driving force behind her workshops. Pam’s Nature Sketchbook Workshops have been popular at resorts, nature centers, arboretums, and art colonies. “Sketchbooks are a perfect way to approach your art without the pressure of completing a finished work of art,” says Pam. “When I’m working in my sketchbooks, I find there’s less pressure to ‘make it perfect.’” Instead, she says, “we’re all out here to experiment, to grow artistically and to see the beauty of nature in a whole new light.”

“My goal is to give you the time you need to settle down and reconnect with the natural world,” Pam adds. “Having a sketchbook and a small handful of drawing tools helps you slow down and really ‘see’ that branch, flower, or vista. Many of my students mention a surprise meditative gift that comes from this practice of quiet observation. It’s really very peaceful.”
