In this workshop we will start to explore of the mixed media side of working with the extremely versatile medium of encaustic. The luminous surface of encaustic is what will usually draw an artist to want to begin to work with it, however, the range of applications from painting, collage, sculpture, and printmaking is what keeps artists engaged with the medium. We will experiment with other materials that can be mixed in, with discussions of durability and safety. Topics to be covered will include painting, collage, image transfers, embedding found materials, and much more! General discussions on studio set up and safety will be covered, as well as presentation options for finished work. Experience with encaustic is not needed for this workshop; however, prior art marking experience will be helpful.
Sarah Rehmer was born and raised in the western suburbs of Chicago, where she still resides. In 2003 Rehmer earned her BA in Graphic Design and Photography from Dominican University in River Forest, IL. She found her love for working with pages from old books and encaustic while auditing a class post-graduation at the university. Rehmer is a FY2012 Illinois Arts Council - Professional Development Grant recipient and her work is held in private collections both around the United States and internationally, as well as Institutional and Corporate collections in Illinois and New York. Rehmer teaches classes and workshops around the Midwest.
