Marbling Outside the Box

June 18-23, 2017 (Four Teaching Days)

Marbling today, while based on an art dating back to the 12 century, is alive with vivid color, texture, and movement. Come learn how to set up a marbling studio, use alum, a carrageenan bath, Ox Gall, Combs and Rakes and acrylic paints to create the intricate, traditional marbling patterns like Italian Vein, The Peacock, Spanish Wave, and Birdwing, as well as more modern and inventive patterns such as Fantasy Marbling, giving you a chance to play with texture, rich color and design. While beginning marblers can create breathtaking papers, experienced marblers can experiment and tweak their work to create their own signature styles. We will spend the first two days marbling papers of all kinds, colors, and textures, then spend the next two days exploring several ways to use these marvelous papers, including creating and embellishing boxes with your marbled papers and other handmade papers from Japan, Thailand, and Nepal, as well as inventive collage and bookbinding. The sky is the limit!
