I can’t think of a better setting for a retreat than an art resort in the woods of northern Wisconsin, away from daily routines. It is no secret that while ‛talk therapy’ helps many articulate themselves, it falls short of reaching information less accessible to language, yet open to the creative process.
Gestalt art therapy is not confined to a pre-conceived ideational framework, rather-facilitates, and mobilizes individual creative potential to project its own meaning. The workshop welcomes anyone curious to use the creative process for personal growth, as well as for professional learning.
A variety of art modalities and materials, from visual to performance art, will be improvised, to achieve, discovery, reflection, understanding and active relaxation.
Ayala Leyser, Ph.D, is a psychotherapist, a hypnotherapist and an artist from Chicago, with over 30 years of individual, and group experience. She sculpts in discarded, found objects at her ‛Out of Line Art gallery’. She believes that Art is an organic aspect of life and that it can offer us much more information and insight than given credit to. Questions?
Ayala Leyser always wore two hats. As a Ph.D psychotherapist she has worked privately as well as at an Illinois State impatient psychiatric institution. As an artist she started with drawing and painting, proceeding to silk screening and soft sculpture. In recent years she focused on hard sculpture and installations using ready-made and discarded objects. As an environmentally conscious artist she reuses simple items such as discarded water bottles, bottle caps, wood and metal scraps. Her art is conceptual, focused on ideas, often being psychological hyperboles. She work, displays and curates shows, salons and performances for other area artists in her Chicago gallery.
While working at the hospital, she realized the power of artistic creativity for both individuals and groups, so she took training with the Gestalt Institute and became certified as a Gestalt art therapist. She found the Gestalt art approach as a powerful and honest way to draw inferences about any individual untapped potential, creativity, and problem-solving capacity. Dr. Leyser also specialized in clinical hypnosis and stress management, and for a while served as the president of the Chicago Society for Clinical Hypnosis. She has conducted many groups using a variety of verbal and non- verbal tools, which were both insightful and FUN! When she refers to ‘art therapy’ or ‘art awareness’, she may include story- telling, games, psychodrama or film.
Groups are different as they are a function of the synergy and the particular participating individuals. I like to facilitate Gestalt art therapy awareness groups as they are always full of surprise! In this context they are aimed at artists and therapists as well as at other curious people.
