Ayala Leyser Ph.d

Gestalt Art Therapy and Creativity Mobilization

Aug 27-Sept 1, 2017 (Three Teaching Days)

The ‘rules’ for art are different than in Art therapy and Creativity mobilization. We will use simple materials aiming for self- expression and self- awareness rather than for the production of something “pretty”. We will pause every once in a while and process the experience in a group situation. The reason of much of what we do and make is rarely available to our awareness. Art activity can direct us to draw inferences about potentials, wishes and ways to proceed, hence increase our awareness, sense of efficacy and problem solving. This creative/conceptual process is likely to charge us with new energy and active hope.

The materials will stay simple involving fun rather than performance anxiety. Recognition will displace any judgment as our artifacts will be only addressed as mirrors to project and reflect upon.

Ayala Leyser always wore two hats. As a Ph.d psychotherapist she has worked privately as well as at an Illinois State impatient psychiatric institution. As an artist she started with drawing and painting, proceeding to silk screening and soft sculpture. In recent years she focused on hard sculpture and installations using ready-made and discarded objects. As an environmentally conscious artist she reuses simple items such as discarded water bottles, bottle caps, wood and metal scraps. Her art is conceptual, focused on ideas, often being psychological hyperboles. She work, displays and curates shows, salons and performances for other area artists in her Chicago gallery.

While working at the hospital, she realized the power of artistic creativity for both individuals and groups, so she took training with the Gestalt Institute and became certified as a Gestalt art therapist. She found the Gestalt art approach as a powerful and honest way to draw inferences about any individual untapped potential, creativity, and problem-solving capacity. Dr. Leyser also specialized in clinical hypnosis and stress management, and for a while served as the president of the Chicago Society for Clinical Hypnosis. She has conducted many groups using a variety of verbal and non- verbal tools, which were both insightful and FUN! When she refers to ‘art therapy’ or ‘art awareness’, she may include story- telling, games, psychodrama or film.

Groups are different as they are a function of the synergy and the particular participating individuals. I like to facilitate Gestalt art therapy awareness groups as they are always full of surprise! In this context they are aimed at artists and therapists as well as at other curious people.
