The end result is just one small element that goes into creating a piece of art. What is often overlooked is the process and the steps taken to open doors intuitively and to encouraging self-expression. The first few days of the workshop will be devoted to building a palette of collage papers. Adding one’s personal touch all the way through by sanding, adding texture, printing, and altering found papers with acrylics and mediums. The most important part of the process is called “play,” which as adults we seem to have left by the wayside. Using a collage sketchbook for meditation and for inspiring new compositions, each student will build upon their own life’s experience for reference. Students will learn about the heat seal method of adhering collage papers to a variety of surfaces. This workshop offers so many ideas, and encourages a playful creative process that will feed your inner artist for a long time.
Laura Lein-Svencner grew up in Downers Grove and now resides in Darien, Illinois. She’s married with four grown children and a home full of loving creatures. Although she has studied drawing, printmaking, sculpture, and papermaking, her love of paper keeps pulling her back to the art of collage. She’s a member of many local and international collage groups and cofounder of the Midwest Collage Society and a signature member of the National Collage Society.
Laura’s has been working in the medium of collage for the past 20 years, her work has been published in many North Light Books, Incite 1,2,3 , AcrylicWorks 2 and 3, and The Art of Expressive Collage. Her collages are represented at The Flying Pig Gallery in Algoma, Wisconsin.
Laura teaches her collage techniques at Mayslake Peabody Estate in Oak Brook, Illinois. During the summer you’ll find her exhibiting her work at art fairs and teaching collage workshops all around the Midwest.
