In this workshop, John will share his approach to painting the urban scene in watercolor. You will arrive at the workshop with a detailed drawing of a town or city scene on a full sheet of Arches watercolor paper. With that drawing as a starting point, John will help with all aspects of painting a representational urban landscape - adding mood and creating emotional content, lighting the scene for dramatic effect, using photo reference in a meaningful way and, most importantly, strengthening and enhancing representational painting through design. The workshop will include demos, critiques and lots of one-on-one individual help. Whether you’ve never tried painting cityscapes or you are an experienced urban painter, this workshop will be an invaluable opportunity to gain new painting insights.
John is a signature member of numerous art societies, including the American Watercolor Society, the National Watercolor Society, the Jiangsu Watercolor Research Institute in China and the Australian Watercolour Institute. He has won more than 220 awards in national and international exhibitions, including the AWS Gold Medal two times, the Silver Star First Place Award in the National Watercolor Society Exhibition two times, the Allied Artists Gold and Silver Medals, the first place award in TWSA three times, the Shanghai Biennial Award and the Thailand Ministry of Culture award. John is a frequent judge and juror for international exhibitions. He has been an invited artist in nineteen international watercolor exhibitions in China, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, Turkey, Russia, Mexico, Italy, Belgium and Australia. His work is included in permanent collections in Asia and Europe as well as in numerous private and corporate collections throughout the United States.
